We kick off a Sunday Film Club season of Roald Dahl movies with an adaptation of one of the writer's best-loved tales, made in 1971 and a staple of bank holiday TV ever since. Some argue that the 2005 Tim Burton version is more faithful to the book, but for our money Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka knocks Johnny Depp out of the park. Other treats in store include terrific songs, exquisitely spoilt children and Jack Albertson as Charlie's twinkle-toed Grandpa Joe.

To warm up for the main feature, you can find a selection of Sugary Shorts screening every day on the Story Steps in the downstairs Children's Library from 1 September. Further Dahl screenings this autumn include James and the Giant Peach and Matilda.
