Petropolis

Dir: Peter Mettler

Canada 2009, 43 minutes

After last year’s deluge of eco-docs, Petropolis takes a completely fresh approach to the campaign documentary. Greenpeace Canada wanted to make a film about the devastation of Alberta’s tar sands caused by bitumen mining. They gave director Peter Mettler (Gambling, Gods and LSD) free reign to work without narration or interviews, simply shooting the sands from the air in high definition, and the result is both majestic and disturbing.
