A touchstone for the Dark River installation was the poetry of Roy Fisher, and this gentle portrait offers an insight into how Birmingham shaped Fisher’s work. Born and raised in Handsworth, he worked as a jazz pianist and a teacher while steadily building a reputation as one of Britain’s most distinctive modernist voices. Tom Pickard’s film sees him back at his childhood home, exploring the local canals, and playing piano at the Midlands Arts Centre.
