Floodgate Kino Dir. Lorenzo Fonda Italy 2008, 84 mins Feat. Blu
Sunday 15th 04:00am
£6 Book tickets
You may have come across a mural by Blu, amorphous bald creatures spread across the side of a building in some European city. Or you might have seen his short MUTO on the web, in which one of the creatures begins to move with startling effect. That film was the result of a collaboration with director Lorenzo Fonda and here the two are reteamed for a journey across Central America, hooking up with local graffiti artists and doodling, painting and filming their way down through Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
What makes this film is Fonda’s lack of ego. He is clearly fascinated by his friend’s creative process and we get to watch over Blu’s shoulder, to see what he cooks up with a wall, a pot of paint and a brush taped to a pole. There are great stylistic flourishes too, as the film jumps between documentary and animation or uses CGI to detail their encounter with an angry land-owner. Blu is reluctant to call himself a street artist, and likewise Megunica is much more than just a graffiti film.
